Lack of access to safe water and sanitation persists as one of the planet's greatest burdens, impacting health, economic development, and human dignity. The good news is there is no need to wait for a silver bullet. We know how to bring people clean water. We just need to do it faster, cheaper, and in ways that are scalable and sustainable. The strategic alliances below are helping us to realize the vision of safe water and the dignity of a toilet for all in our lifetime.
In 2008, PepsiCo Foundation and Water.org began working together to bring access to clean water and sanitary toilets to people in need. Thanks to the funding support of early philanthropic investors such as PepsiCo, the pioneering WaterCredit Initiative was made possible. In 2011, PepsiCo Foundation expanded this strategic alliance, and the partnership is on track to reach one million people with sustainable access to safe water by 2015. The PepsiCo partnership is creating sustainable and scalable models that will accelerate access to safe water and sanitation in India, and ultimately throughout the developing world.
In 2009, Gary White was selected to join the community of Skoll social entrepreneurs. The Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship carried with it a monetary award to help reach more people with access to clean water and sanitation through the WaterCredit Initiative. The Skoll Foundation's early investment allowed Water.org to demonstrate the model and achieve the level of confidence and results Water.org needed to establish its credibility within the sector. The Skoll strategic alliance is enabling ground-breaking online community-building efforts, as well as the exploration of opportunities to test new innovations with the WaterCredit model itself.
In 2010, Water.org and The MasterCard Foundation formed a strategic alliance to accelerate access to clean water and sanitation to an unprecedented level in Sub-Saharan Africa. This partnership is enabling one of the largest WaterCredit initiatives to date and is anticipated to mobilize considerable, additional commercial and social capital into the water and sanitation sector in Kenya and Uganda. The four-year program is increasing the capacity and capabilities of microfinance institutions in the region while developing and deploying cross-sector forums, toolkits, exposure visits, and impact evaluations.
In 2011, Water.org and the Caterpillar Foundation teamed up to reach people in need with clean water and sanitation over three years in South Asia. Building on the solid success of the WaterCredit Initiative, the program is supporting a significant expansion of Water.org’s WaterCredit activities in India, as well as funding a market assessment to explore the launch of WaterCredit in Indonesia for the first time. The Caterpillar strategic alliance is helping to reach more people with safe water and hygienic sanitary facilities at a faster rate and at a decreasing philanthropic cost-per-person, as well as attracting divergent sources of capital to support lending in the water and sanitation sector in South Asia.
