Drought in Ethiopia Leads to Worsening Conditions

A drought which struck most of Ethiopia in the early part of the year has led to a critical humanitarian crisis.

Tigray, a region in Ethiopia where WaterPartners is very active, is one of the areas hit hard by the crisis. In areas like Tigray, rivers run intermittently or have dried up completely. Safe, accessible water supplies have disappeared from many rural communities, and almost all of the traditional sources of water are unsanitary, low-yielding, seasonal, and/or located at a great distance from village settlements.

In affected communities, along with limited food supply, during times of drought, water-related diseases are rampant. When the limited rains arrive, human and animal waste wash into and contaminate the few remaining water sources. As was the case even before the most recent drought, diarrheal and water-related diseases serve as principal causes of death in young children.

In the absence of a safe water source, people gather contaminated drinking water from a shallow pond shared with livestock.

Many people living in regions like Tigray are subsistence farmers. In most parts of the country, this year’s short rains never came, and there are no crops to tide farmers over until the main harvest in November. Safe wells and water storage facilities in the villages would make a tremendous difference to these communities as they struggle to recover from this year’s drought and prepare for the inevitable next one. But they cannot afford to obtain them on their own.

That’s where your donations make all the difference.

Your financial support means WaterPartners can fund more projects to bring safe drinking water to villages in need. For less than $25, you can provide someone with access to safe drinking water for life in Ethiopia. Donate now.
