Support Water.org with your video creation (One Day on Earth) - CALL TO ACTION: Share video of your water

Without water, life would not exist. It is a prerequisite for all human and economic development. This 10.10.10 we invite you to share with the world how you access life’s most precious commodity. Whether tap, well, river, or otherwise, capture your water source on video and add it to the world document. Together, our efforts will remind the world not to take water access for granted and will bring new attention to water access inadequacies that need to be improved. Footage that you create will potentially be used in a feature film, as well as a short film created specifically for Water.org, and will live in perpetuity in One Day on Earth’s global archive.

What the World Needs Now – Innovative Ideas from TEDxKC – Part II (Brainzooming) – For whatever reason, McCamon’s TEDxKC presentation was incredibly brief. It provided staggering statistics about the amount of solid human waste that’s left untreated globally in a world where more people have access to mobile phones than toilets. His contention is the issue doesn’t get more attention because it’s a private one whose solutions are realized household-by-household and the very visual celebratory experience which exists with clean water solutions (i.e., kids playing in water) doesn’t exist with solid waste solutions. At one point during TEDxKC, McCamon said, “Someone always lives downstream.”

Matt Damon’s trip to Ethiopia to advocate for clean water (Top Celebrity Headlines) – Matt Damon is advocating for clean water and plumbing throughout the world as part of the charity he co-founded, Water.org. He appeared in a video for CNN to show how difficult it is for people in rural northern Ethiopia to collect water for themselves and their families. People, including schoolchildren, walk hours and carry heavy jugs in order to get dirty water from a hand dug well. The risk of water-borne diseases, like dysentery and cholera, from the visibly muddy water is high. Water.org strives to bring awareness to the need for clean, potable water throughout the world as well as build safe community wells and toilets.

Listen to the Barclay Martin Ensemble’s first single from its new album (The Pitch) – This record represents a culmination of years of study, practice, writing and love of making music together. It is a departure stylistically from our previous releases, perhaps a deeper understanding after years of playing together. It is at the same time the beginning of an inspiring new partnership with water.org as we work together to bring water, educational programs and sanitation to the Kyuso District of Kenya. We’ll be bringing you updates and information about the community and progress as we travel together. We’d love you to join us.

Join the Day of Action & Achieve the MDGs (ONE) – In September of 2000, leaders of the 191 United Nations member countries met in New York City and formulated a plan to halve extreme poverty by 2015. Unanimously, these leaders agreed upon eight comprehensive, holistic, and attainable goals, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). If fulfilled, the MDGs will provide the poorest 17% of the world, who live on less than a dollar a day, with the opportunity to attend primary school, access to clean water, better child and maternal healthcare, and a sustainable future.

The ONE Campaign, Water.org, Malaria No More, Rainn Wilson, Olivia Wilde, 30 Student Body Presidents and so many others are using their voices on Facebook and Twitter to help spread the word today and through the end of the month.

Klean Kanteen Special Edition Bottles (Klean Kanteen) - Klean Kanteen is part of a growing marketing trend that supports earth-friendly causes with a percentage of the profits from their product sales. (Think TOMS shoes – for each pair purchased, they send one to a child in need; or Boxed Water, which sends ten percent of its profits to world water relief foundations and another ten percent to reforestation efforts.) Klean Kanteen currently has two Special Edition bottles.

Fill. Drink. Repeat. This is the basic process whereby owners of the Klean Kanteen (or any other reusable stainless steel water bottle) stay hydrated. These bottles were designed by Shepard Fairey’s Studio No. 1 for the launch of SHFT and feature the original “Fill. Drink. Repeat.” artwork. Ten percent of the proceeds from the sale of these bottles goes to water.org (a well-known water charity co-founded by Matt Damon.) Not only do you get a cool product that helps you cut down on plastic waste. You also get the satisfaction of providing safe, clean drinking water to those who don’t have access to it. So take a sip of the filtered tap water in your Klean Kanteen “Fill. Drink. Repeat.” Special Edition bottle, sit back, relax, and watch the world change.

Getting the Most From Your Facebook Fans (Chronicle of Philanthropy) – By following the lessons of social game developers, Chase engaged more than 2-million Facebook users in a dialogue on philanthropy. We found that these types of interactions could easily evolve into creative fundraising solutions like those undertaken by Water.org and the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA).

Both organizations partnered with Zynga, the largest game developer on Facebook, to allow players to purchase “virtual goods” branded with the Water.org and HDSA logos within specific Zynga games. These ”virtual goods” raised more than $130,000 on behalf of HDSA and Water.org and enabled players to connect with and donate directly to causes like Water.org’s clean water projects in Haiti.

A clean bill of health? How humanitarian agencies can remedy approaches to nutrition and sanitation (PRLog) – Rich Thorsten, Director of International Programs at Water.org and one of the panellists, asserts: “Sanitation has finally begun to receive more attention in the international development arena; forming partnerships with people in developing countries plays a critical role in the success and sustainability of sanitation interventions.” However, the availability of healthcare between differing countries in the developing world is becoming increasingly disproportionate. It would seem that development resources are progressively more focused on larger, lower risk nations and therefore a critical role is played in forming partnerships to ensure the success and sustainability of sanitation interventions in these areas.
