Water.org congratulates our partner Grameen Koota on their recent achievement of lending more than $1B INR ($16.3M US) to individual borrowers in India to address their household water and sanitation needs.
In a country where 802 million people lack improved access to sanitation, Water.org has worked in partnership with Grameen Koota to scale the impact of WaterCredit , an initiative that allows people in need to access small loans for water connections or toilets. This empowers them to accelerate change in their homes and communities.
Grameen Koota’s branches have served more than half a million people from the states of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Through this leading microfinance institution, and a generous grant from the PepsiCo Foundation, residents have had the opportunity to participate in Water.org’s educational programs as well as Water Credit. The results improve the health and safety of their families.
Grameen Koota is one of the only microfinance institutions worldwide to have made water and sanitation loans at this level. This accomplishment has impacted thousands of lives and has helped to further the mission of Water.org to bring safe water and toilets to all.
