As Jeanine fills her bucket with safe, clean water she recounts the time when, in 2012, her family and friends became ill, and some even died, because the water they were consuming was full of bacteria ultimately infecting them with cholera. In fact, two of her younger brothers fell victim to the illness. Thankfully, the boys received adequate oral re-hydration therapy (fluid replacement used as a treatment for dehydration from cholera) and they survived. Several weeks after the boys recovered, Jeanine’s family learned the source of cholera was due to bacteria present in their main water source, the Maringouin spring.

After experiencing so much personal hardship and loss related to their former water source, Jeanine and her family are very happy their community now has a water treatment system through Water.org and partner organizations; ASSODLO and DINEPA. The solution is working well. Her father purchases pre-paid cards to pay for the family’s water at the kiosk and they can access it as needed. The residents of Corail Thor, Haiti are pleased to know the chlorination system will prevent cholera from negatively affecting their families again.
