"Since our family got this water rain storage tank, we have never had to go back to the stream because we always have water at home. Having water here is the best thing that has happened to our family." - Mueni
Thank you for making safe water and access to education possible for families around the world
Meet Mueni
Mueni is an outstanding student and the star of her school's soccer team. Mueni loves going to school each day where her favorite subject is history.
To get water for her family, Mueni was tasked with the chore of walking to collect water from a stream. This took time away from studying and playing, and the water from the stream made her ill.
Reductions in time spent collecting water increases school attendance, especially for girls.
With a small loan, Mueni’s parents were able to install a lasting safe water solution for their home in Kenya. Now, Mueni has the time and health to study, practice, and turn her dreams into reality.

Water is the way to enable access to education
An article by Nicole Terrizzi, Senior Strategic Development Executive
As a former teacher, I know first-hand what resources students need to learn. There are resources such as access to an accredited program, licensed teachers, pens, pencils, paper. Then there are even more essential, undeniable resources. What I observed working in marginalized communities is that if students lack access to food, water, or shelter, it impacts their ability to reach their full potential. In those cases, I observed school is not the priority for those families—survival is.
To make systemic, global change in improving and increasing student access to school and the education provided, the universal need for safe water must be addressed. My determination to help address increasing and improving access to education started in the classroom and led to my role at Water.org where I develop relationships with our donor partners.
Access to safe water at home and at school helps keep girls in school. For every year a girl stays in school, her income as an adult is expected to increase by 20%.
Women and girls spend 200 million hours every day collecting water. We are working to change this.
A catalyst for sustainable change: Using financing to put the power of water into the hands of people in need
An article by Pablo Anton Diaz, Associate Regional Business Director, Latin America
Solving the global water crisis must be about empowering people to be agents of their own change and progress. At Water.org, we do this by treating the people we serve as clients and customers who can define their own solutions and futures. Through our financial approach and lasting solutions, we are using financing to put the power of water into the hands of people in need.
By empowering people living in poverty with small loans for long-term safe water and sanitation solutions, we help them build a sense of ownership as active stakeholders in the process. With sustainable access to safe water at home, they experience improved health, more time to earn income, and educational and work opportunities that become ingrained in the fabric of their lives. And these benefits help ensure lasting impact.
