Flipping the statistics

Sixty-four percent of the world's population have access to a toilet. In Uganda the proportion who do not have a toilet is the reverse - 31.5 million have no place to go. This is more than half the population living without access to what many take for granted. Not having a toilet nearby leads to open defecation, poor health, and safety concerns.

These men stand by their recently constructed toilets which are available to five households. Together, the five families constructed the facilities through Water.org. Now these men, their wives, and their children have the opportunity to experience a life not burdened by the issues millions face without a toilet.

With each sanitation project like this, Water.org is working to flip the statistics in Uganda, and around the world.

Capital: Kampala
Population of 40.1 million
8.4 million lack access to safe water
31.5 million lack access to improved sanitation
63% of the total population lives on less than US$2 per day
