Rani's Toilet

While the toilet is a basic need for all human beings, not having one affects the safety of women more often than men. In Karnataka, India, due to lack of proper sanitation facilities, Rani’s family members were going out into open for defecation and had to travel long distances every day for this.

For Rani and her daughters, this caused immense problems, as it is not safe for women to go out at odd hours alone. Rani, who is a Self Help Group (SHG) worker herself, had always desired to build a toilet in her house, but she could not afford the expenses due to her financial situation. During one of the SHG meetings, Rani met Mrs. Puspha Gracian, an animator for the Organization for the Development of People (ODP).

Rani learned about the sanitation program of Water.org and ODP which helped families build toilets by providing easy, repayable micro loans. She took on a loan of Rs7000/- ($123.54 USD) with 1% interest to build a household toilet in December 2012 and completed the construction in three months.

Today, having a toilet in the household has brought much relief to Rani’s life. Her elder daughter Jyothi, who is pregnant, does not have to endure the inconvenience of walking long distances for open defecation. With a new toilet in the household, her family enjoys good health and better hygienic facilities. The sense of cleanliness has increased and they feel proud and dignified to have a toilet of their own.

This success story was submitted by Water.org’s partner organization ODP, and was made possible by a generous grant from the Caterpillar Foundation.
