Safe water for Savita's family

Among the many benefits of having affordable, lasting access to safe water at home Savita notes health as one of the most important changes her family experiences. “Now my children do not fall sick,” Savita shared as she recalled life before getting a borewell on her property.

Women and children spend 200 million hours every day collecting water. Savita is no longer one of them.

Savita and her family live in a community in India where piped water utilities are not available and household access to safe water is not common. Local families often walk to streams or ponds to collect water and bathe. According to Savita’s experience, those shared sources become contaminated and unsafe due to frequent use by so many people.

In their efforts to get water for their families, women often face an impossible choice – certain death without water or possible death due to illness from dirty water.

To protect her family’s health and lives, Savita sought a solution to solve her water crisis. Through Water.org’s local partner in her community in India, Savita found what she was looking for.

“Since I took the loan, there are no more problems... now my children do not fall sick.”

Savita shares the story of her water crisis and how a small, affordable loan for a safe water solution helped end it.
